Social, political and economic factors chipped away at its supremacy. And so the post colonial era down in the shadow of the British Empire, Revolution and nationalism stirred in nearby lands is devastated by the great famine. In 1845 to 1847 witnessed nearly half of its population vanished. Unlike Great Britain, Ireland had not experienced the industrial boom of the Victorian era. Facing hardship, many Irish citizens embarked on a steady exodus to Britain, the USA and Australia. They blamed the British government for the famine, seeing it as a failure of the 1800 act of union designed to favour Britain at Ireland's expense. Although Victoria and Ireland did not achieve home rule, nationalist movements gain momentum. The latter half of Queen Victoria's reign saw fervent debates and conflict, setting the stage for the Anglo Irish War of 1919 to 1921. This period marked the beginning of Ireland's quest for independence, a struggle that would shape its destiny for generations to come. This time, Irish literature experiences a renaissance known as the Irish Renaissance. Drama emerges, providing a platform for literary voices like the ones for Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. Often referred to as the golden age of literature. The Victorian era witnessed an unprecedented search in readership, fueled by a newfound emphasis on education. Meet now Oscar Wilde, a literary genius, a social icon and a figure whose life was as captivating as his works during his time at Oxford, while immersed himself in the aesthetic movement that claimed art for its beauty alone, his flamboyant style and sharp wit made him a beloved figure in London's social scene, but also drew criticism and intense media scrutiny. Accusations of homosexuality led to Wilde's downfall, resulting in imprisonment and exile in Paris, where he faced years of hardship and loneliness before his death. Whilst prose reflects the aesthetics movements, principles characterised by cleverness and wit but often lack in emotional depth, notable works include the Canterville Ghost, The Happy Prince and All the Tales in the Picture of Dorian Grey. The story follows Dorian Grey, a young man who remains eternally youthful while a portrait of him ages and bears the scars of his immoral deeds while explores the consequences of vanity and moral corruption. The Importance of Being Earnest is a witty and satirical play that mocks Victorian society's hypocrisy and triviality. It is known for its witty epigrams, the picture of Dorian Grey and the importance of being earnest continue to captivate audiences with a wit, satire and exploration of complex themes. In the words of Oscar Wilde himself, the only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. By the end of the World War Second World War, Shaw had come a cult figure and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1925. Among his most well known works are Saint John Man and Superman, Mayor Barbara Heartbreak House and Big Maia.
